Get Tan The Healthy Way

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could achieve a natural tan without the risk of skin cancer and aging? We have a way! It’s called our Bronzing Booth. You’ll look like you just spent a week in the Keys but with NONE of the sun damage. BONUS: we’ll let you put your jewelry in a cute little seashell while you’re getting a tan. Beach life in the Midwest!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Right about now, you might be thinking, “But, I don’t want to be orange!” We don’t want that either but we understand your reservations. A lot of people have shied away from spray tanning since it first became popular in the early 2000s and don’t realize how much the tanning formulas have evolved.

At Transformations, we use Norvell, a high quality, natural product that will leave your skin looking naturally bronzed and feeling amazing. Have you ever seen Dancing With The Stars? Norvell is what they use to get their skin looking so fabulous. Their products have won tons of awards and they have really revolutionized the sunless tanning industry.

So, let’s recap. The Bronzing Booth will:
       a. save your skin from the harmful effects of the sun
       b. provide a natural bronzed radiance
       c. provide long lasting moisture

So far, so good! But, there’s one more important thing to cover. At Transformations, your health and wellness are our top priority and we encourage our guests to try healthy beauty alternatives. That’s why we we chose a tanning formula that is paraben/gluten/allergen free and 100% vegan! How awesome is that?!

So, what happens during the Bronzing Booth treatment? First, you will enter our spray tanning booth and one of our skincare experts will administer a perfectly bronze tan using a spray gun. You may wear as much or as little clothing as you desire. You will see immediate effects with the bronzing agents but that color is simply a guideline for the DHA administration and your natural tan will appear shortly after.

To ensure you get the most out of your spray tanning experience, we have a few recommendations for you:

  • Shave/wax and exfoliate the day before your spray tan. Concentrate on rougher areas like the elbows, knees, hands, and feet with the exfoliation.
  • Do not wear any moisturizer, deodorant, perfume, or makeup before your spray tan. These products can disrupt the integrity of the spray tan formula.
  • Wear loose clothing and minimal jewelry. Clothing or jewelry that are too tight may smudge your tan!
  • Do not shower for 8 hours after treatment. 24 hours is ideal.

After you receive your spray tan, you’ll probably want your color to last as long as possible. That’s why we selected some really effective tan extenders to help you maintain your look. Currently, we offer the Prolong and Endure which we have descriptions of below:

prolongendure

The last thing we have to mention is our $99 Special. Starting in May, you can receive a full Bronzing Treatment for just $99! So, right now is a great time to try it out.

10 Skincare Habits You Need To Develop In Your 20s and 30s

A lot is happening in your 20s and 30s. You’re finding out who you are, where you belong, building lifelong relationships, getting your first home, and beginning your career (at least, you’re trying to). It’s also time to start thinking more seriously about the future…of your skin! In your 20s, your skin begins to lose elasticity and show sun damage. EEK! And in your 30s, fine lines and wrinkles become noticeable. DOUBLE EEK!

Simply washing your face every now and then like you did in high school isn’t going to do the trick anymore. If you’re ready to get serious about your skincare routine, read on!

  1. Take off your makeup every night. Leaving makeup on can cause bacteria buildup and stretching of the pores. This is one step you absolutely don’t want to skip!
  2. Exfoliate. Removing dead skin cells (the ones that make your skin look dry and dull) helps your other products to penetrate the skin more deeply. We love the glo Therapeutics Daily Polishing Cleanser for every day exfoliation and deep cleaning. We have also found it does a fantastic job removing makeup (See #1)!
  3. Use SPF every day. Transformations Spa Director and Esthetician, Samantha Vandivier, weighed in on the subject. “This is the most important thing you can do for your skin at any age,” she says. “Sun exposure is the number one cause of aging.” So, lather on that sunscreen if want to keep your skin looking beautiful and wrinkle free, honey!
  4. Find your cleanser BFF. It might take some experimenting but finding the right cleanser is so important. If you haven’t already, now is the time to upgrade your grocery store beauty finds to professional skincare products. Many of the beautiful staff members of Transformations get their bright, glowing faces from glo Therapeutics Purifying Gel Cleanser because it cleanses the skin without stripping its natural moisture and it’s great for all skin types!
  5. Use products with retinol and glycolic acid. These two ingredients will be your little skincare superheroes in the battle against aging. The use of glycolic acid promotes a youthful appearance by removing dead skin cells (See #2) while retinol promotes healthy cell regeneration.
  6. Drink lots of water. Have you noticed how celebrities always have a water bottle in their hand? That’s because their nutritionists know that drinking water is one of the best things you can do for your body! It flushes out toxins, promotes weight loss,  increases energy, and…drumroll… hydrates the skin! Our bodies are made up mostly of water and our skin is the largest organ of the body after all. Drinking water is a no brainer! See how much water you should drink according to Harvard Medical School.
  7. Find your magic serum. Serums are all the rage when it comes to anti-aging. That’s because they are very concentrated and pack a real skincare punch. Recently formulas are also more effective and less damaging than they ever have been. Take Renew Serum by glo Therapeutics for example. The salycilic acid is great for keeping acne at bay (which can still be an annoying problem in your 20s) while the glycolic is great for cell turnover, as we mentioned before.
  8. Take your vitamins. Use them and consume them! Put some lemon in your tea every morning to load up on Vitamin C. It will give your immune system a boost and help with collagen production and skin repair which is exactly what your 20 something year old skin needs! Take a good multi vitamin rich in B, D, K, and E! Product wise, we recommend the Skin Protecting Power Duo by glo Therapeutics.
  9. Moisturize. Finding the right moisturizer can actually be kind of tricky. You will really need to pay attention to your skin type when selecting the right one. We have an excellent skin type quiz you can take to find out which products may work best for you! Using eye creams is especially important as the skin in this area is thinner and more delicate. “It’s usually where people start to notice the first signs of aging,” Samantha Vandivier says. We think Cyto-luxe Eye Cream by glo Therapeutics is the queen of all eye creams.
  10. Find a good balance. Using too many products can overwhelm and irritate the skin. Consult with one of our skincare professionals to find a balance that works for you!

Call 317-882-1773 to schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our estheticians.

Please note that we are not medical professionals at Transformations Salon and Spa. We simply share information that could prove useful to your health and well being. Always consult with a physician if you have concerns or questions about your diet or exercising!

Essential Oil 101

Let’s talk about essential oils, baby. Let’s talk about their pro-per-ties. OK, but seriously… we’re sure you’re familiar with essential oils but do you know what they are good for other than making your house smell amazing? If you want to learn more, read on!

Lavender
Ah, lavender…a true classic. It’s great for a good night’s rest, nervousness, circulation, respiratory issues, brain fog, and calming fussy babies. It even works well as a bug repellant. We’re talking mosquitos, midges (What are midges by the way?), moths, and even lice. The best part of lavender is that fresh, clean fragrance, making it a popular choice for body care and home cleaning products. Lavender FTW!

Eucalyptus
We created a post dedicated entirely to the benefits of eucalyptus which you can read here.

Lemon
With its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, lemon oil makes for a great cleaner and deodorizer. It has also been shown to increase concentration and promote feelings of well-being. Did you know that you can add a few drops of lemon oil to your conditioner for super shiny hair? Regardless of how you use it, this happy little yellow fruit is sure to add some sparkle to your day.

Peppermint
Like eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil has a natural cooling effect which can help cool the body or even relieve muscular and joint pain if applied topically. Ever chewed peppermint gum or an Altoid? Peppermint’s antimicrobial properties make it ideal for eliminating bad breath. To naturally reduce a fever, especially in children, add a few drops to coconut oil and rub it on the neck and bottom of the feet. The benefits don’t stop there! It’s great for stomachaches, increasing energy and concentration, sinus and allergy issues, and teething your baby. Amazing!
We currently have an all natural Rosemary Mint mineral soak we use in a variety of therapeutic services. Come in and try it out!

Tea Tree
Tea tree oil has natural and very effective anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. You can use tea tree oil mixed with water or coconut oil to naturally fight nail fungus. To help clear up a sinus infection, put a few drops on your shower floor while taking a hot shower (or put a few drops in boiling water) and breathe in the steam. It’s the old Crocodile Dundee trick! Its antibacterial properties also make it great deodorizer. Put it on all of your smelly places to freshen up naturally!

Frankincense
French for “pure incense”, this fragrance of old was once held in very high regard. You’ve no doubt heard of the frankincense and myrrh combination, which was offered to the infant Jesus (Matthew 2:11). It is said to have anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and anti-anxiety properties. In fact, a 2008 study reported that frankincense smoke was able to relieve depression and anxiety in mice.

Did you learn something new today? We hope so! Transformations carries all of the oils mentioned above as well as some specially designed roll-on oil blends that you can wear. Come into Transformations today and see what essential oils can do for you! We are here to help!

10 Surprising Benefits of Massage

We all know massages feel great. But what do they actually do? While there still isn’t conclusive evidence on the benefits of massage, there are countless studies that suggest it should be a top priority for many of us. The list goes on and on but we chose 10 benefits that may surprise you.

  1. Posture

Do people constantly tell you to stand/sit up straight? If so, you may want to listen. Bad posture can lead to weakened muscles and pain over time. Routine massages help to ease muscular tension while also relieving joint pain and pressure. This allows the body to relax and properly align.

  2. Stress/Anxiety

While receiving a massage, the body releases serotonin and dopamine, two powerful neurotransmitters located in the pleasure center of the brain. Research has also shown that massages can lower your heart rate and blood pressure. It is recommended to routinely visit your massage therapist for optimal results.

  3. Fibromyalgia

Over 5 million people suffer from this mysterious disease and there is currently no cure. However, pain management is still an option and one of the best natural remedies is massage therapy. It helps by easing physical and mental stress, improving muscle tone, and relieving headaches.

  4. Exercise Recovery/Injuries

Anyone who exercises would be wise to incorporate massage therapy into their wellness routine. It can shorten recovery time and helps to heal injuries. It does these things by eliminating toxic buildup from the body, improves circulation, relaxes the nervous system, and stretches connective tissue.

  5. Insomnia

Have you ever fallen asleep during a massage? There is a reason for this. We mentioned how massage causes the body to release serotonin. Well, that’s exactly what our bodies need to get a good night’s sleep. Also, we can carry a lot of muscular tension which can make falling asleep a challenge. Put simply, massage promotes relaxation and our bodies and minds must relax in order to fall asleep.

  6. Chronic Fatigue

Massage is highly recommended to help manage Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Those who suffer from this condition often experience stress, anxiety, and poor sleep quality which can all be improved with regular massage therapy sessions. Those with CFS who are not able to exercise may want to opt for a deep tissue massage as it is great for circulation and muscle stimulation.

  7. Asthma

Some asthma patients experience bronchial spasms in response to stress or anxiety. Massage literally teaches the body how to relax and promotes easy breathing and reduces stress.

  8. Illness Prevention

Massage has actually been shown to increase the amount of white blood cells in our bodies (which boosts the immune system). It is also known that people who endure high levels of stress get sick more often and massage takes care of that as well. We recommend massage for individuals to maintain a healthy immune system, not to cure illnesses. Think of having a massage like taking a vitamin.

  9. Digestive Issues

Massaging the abdominal area or using acupressure can stimulate movement in the digestive tract which can reduce cramping, bloating, gas, and constipation.

  10. Headaches

Whether you suffer from tension headaches or migraines, massage can definitely help. Have your massage therapist focus on the head, neck, and shoulders to relieve tension. A 10-20 minute chair massage is great quick fix!

There are so many benefits to massage but no treatment is one size fits all. If you’re not sure which type of massage is best for you, our professional massage therapists are here to help. They will happily address your needs and concerns before your massage. We also offer complimentary wellness consultations!

Mostly A’s – Dry

If you got mostly A’s, your skin type is probably dry. You give your skin moisture day after day and it never seems to be enough. You may notice fine lines, lack of elasticity, or irritation/inflammation due to constant dryness.

Tips: Make sure to use a professional exfoliating scrub before you moisturize. Also, avoid long, hot baths/showers and cranking the heat up during the winter. Certain medications and ingredients in makeup or skincare products could also be causing your skin to dry out so do a little research on what’s in the products you use.

Glo Therapeutics Product Recommendations: Conditioning Milk Cleanser, B5 Hydration, Brightening Polish, Restorative Cream, and Restorative Mask

Transformations Service Recommendations: Hydradermie Treatment, Beaute Neuve Double Peeling Treatment, HydraFacial, or Youthful Transformation

Mostly B’s – Oily

If you got mostly B’s, your skin type is probably oily. You notice greasiness and shine throughout the day and go through blotting pads like bobby pins. Your skin is also prone to breakouts and blackheads due to high oil production. On the bright side, your skin is less prone to fine lines and wrinkles and sun damage than other skin types.

Tips: Your oil production could be caused by stress, hormonal changes, certain medications, seasonal changes, or even an overuse of skincare products. The key is to find a good balance of products to control oil while keeping your skin’s PH balanced. Avoid touching your face throughout the day and make sure to clean your phone regularly to help prevent breakouts. Most of all, make sure you are taking time to take care of YOU!

Glo Therapeutics Product Recommendations: Purifying Gel Cleanser, Purifying Tonic, and Oil Control Emulsion

Transformations Service Recommendations: Purifying Treatment, HydraFacial, or customized Transformations Glo Facial

Mostly C’s – Combination

If you got mostly C’s, your skin type is probably combination. Most of your oil production can be found in your T-zone (nose, forehead, and chin), making those areas prone to blackheads and breakouts while the rest of your skin could range from normal to the dry side.

Tips: Like dry or oily skin, your balance issues could be caused by hormonal changes, certain medications, or stress. Using the right products is the answer to balancing things out. Also, avoid picking and let your products do the work!

Glo Therapeutics Product Recommendations: Hydrating Gel Cleanser, Purifying Tonic, and Oil Free Moisturizer

Transformations Service Recommendations: Purifying Treatment, HydraFacial, Hydradermie Treatment, or customized Transformations Glo Facial

Mostly D’s – Normal

If you got mostly D’s, your skin type is probably normal. Lucky you! You have few imperfections, a radiant complexion, and hardly ever experience breakouts or irritation.

Tips: Everyone can benefit from some sort of skincare regimen. Make sure to always remove your makeup before bed and use sunscreen before leaving home.

Glo Therapeutics Product Recommendation: Moisturizing Tint SPF 30+ and Lip Revival (because lips need love too)

Transformations Service Recommendations: Transformations Glo Facial

Mostly E’s – Sensitive

If you got mostly E’s, your skin type is probably sensitive. You may experience red, itchy, and dry skin on a regular basis and your breakouts are likely accompanied by inflammation. You may also have premature wrinkling and flaky patches. You probably notice things get worse with very cold or very hot weather.

Tips: While your issues could be genetic, your skin may be sensitive due to certain medications or ingredients in makeup or skincare products. So, read your labels critically and build a strong skincare regimen using professional products designed for sensitive skin.

Product Recommendations: Gentle Cream Cleanser, Calming Flower Mist, Balancing Moisture Remedy, and Cucumber Recovery Mask

Transformations Service Recommendations: Hydradermie Treatment or customized Transformations Glo Facial with Cool Globe Therapy

10 Eucalyptus Oil Benefits

As we endure these cold, winter months, we felt it would be fitting to discuss the benefits eucalyptus oil. Many of you already know about the medicinal properties of this amazing oil but we have a few uses that might actually surprise you!

1. Cold & Influenza Treatment

If you’ve ever used Vicks Vapor Rub, you’ve felt the power of eucalyptus. Australian Aboriginals use eucalyptus infusions as a traditional medicine for treating a variety of ailments. Eucalyptus not only works as an expectorant but it can also rid your body of toxins and harmful microorganisms. Try adding several drops of essential oil into your diffuser before bed to help you get a good night’s sleep when you’re ill. For extra healing power, add several drops to hot water, soak a towel in the mixture, then place the towel over your face and breathe in the steam for 5-10 minutes.

2. Scalp & Hair Conditioner

Eucalyptus oil works wonders on dandruff and dry, itchy scalps. It also works as a follicle stimulant! For added shine, thickness, and overall hair health, try adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to some room temperature coconut or olive oil and saturate the hair from toot to tip. Just make sure to use the Eucalyptus sparingly as too much can actually reduce hair shine and create buildup on your scalp. Try using this treatment about an hour before showering. You’ll want to shampoo and condition your hair really well to make sure any residue is gone.

3. Natural Cleaner

Eucalyptus works as a natural disinfectant and antiseptic and can be used in a wide variety of household cleaning projects. It also does a number on grease and clothing stains. Do a quick Google search to learn how to make your own natural home care products (including soap). If you suffer from allergies or asthma, using natural products with Eucalyptus will be a great help, which brings us to the next one…

4. Sinus & Allergy Reliever

Eucalyptus oil isn’t just great for cold and flu sufferers. Those with allergies and asthma can find relief from it as well. A study from NYU Medical School found that using eucalyptus oil was effective in treating sinusitis (sinus infections). Patients who took the oil internally showed faster improvement with their allergy and sinus issues.

5. Muscle & Joint Pain Reliever

If you suffer from muscle and/or joint pain, massaging eucalyptus oil onto the skin can help! Eucalyptus oil has natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties so it is often recommended to those suffering from rheumatism, lumbago, sprained ligaments and tendons, stiff muscles, aches, fibrosis, and even nerve pain. Massage the oil in a circular motion on the affected areas of the body. Remember to dilute the oil before using it!

6. Odor Remover

Pets, cigarette smoke, mold, you name it and eucalyptus can probably take care of it! Soak a rag in eucalyptus oil infused water, dab it onto the item in question, and place the item outside to dry in the sunlight. This action not only takes care of existing odors but also prevents them from coming back. Mix with with water, lemon oil, and tea tree oil for a super odor busting home spray!

7. Mental Stimulant

Many people suffer from fatigue and sluggishness, especially during winter months with all of the illness and lack of sunlight. Eucalyptus oil is refreshing and a natural stimulant and has been known to combat exhaustion while rejuvenating the spirit. Pour yourself a cup of tea, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to your oil diffuser, and get happy!

8. Cooling Agent

Eucalyptus oil is often referred to as “fever oil” as it works to reduce fevers and cool body temperature on hot, summer days. When mixed with peppermint oil, it packs a serious cooling punch and even works as a natural deodorant!

9. Chronic Respiratory Treatment

We mentioned how Eucalyptus helps with cold and flu symptoms. However, it also helps with more severe respiratory problems like asthma, COPD, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Using eucalyptus is proven to dilate the blood vessels to allow more oxygen into the lungs. For those who suffer from the ailments mentioned above, try adding a few drops of Eucalyptus oil along with some Peppermint oil to your diffuser to open up those airways!

10. Infection & Wound Treatment

Eucalyptus oil has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties that are effective in treating wounds, burns, and cuts. It also can be made into a salve/ointment and used on bug bites and stings. Eucalyptus oil can prevent infection and even provide natural pain relief to the area where it is applied. Amazing!

Use Caution

You must always exercise caution when using essential oils as you would with any healing method. It is important to remember that you should ALWAYS dilute eucalyptus oil before using it as it is highly concentrated. Side effects of Eucalyptus oil use include:

1. Diarrhea
2. Nausea
3. Vomiting
4. Stomach problems
5. Airborne contact dermatitis

If you experience any of the above symptoms, immediately discontinue use and seek medical attention.

Signs of Eucalyptus Oil Poisoning

If you notice the following symptoms after using eucalyptus oil, immediately discontinue use and seek medical attention:

  • Dizziness
  • Feeling of suffocation
  • Small pupils

Don’t let the side effects scare you away from this amazing oil! If used properly, you will likely have no problems. If you have concerns, please consult your physician.

It’s a small but classically effective way to make someone feel special and loved! Add to any spa service for $15.

We also have several specials going on from now until the end of February. Every couple of months, we feature a new fragrance. This season, fall in love with Ginger Honey Bliss, a combination of whipped honey, cinnamon, ginger, and sweet cream. This fragrance is featured in the FarmHouse Fresh Body Treatment and the FarmHouse Fresh mani/pedi.
